Cute, cocky guy Raj, played by Aamir Khan gets blown off by beautiful, rich girl Madhu, played by Madhuri Dixit and a feud begins. Their practical jokes turn ugly, however, when the two go on a class trip together and Madhu tricks everyone into thinking Raj has tried to rape her. Now really angry, Raj decides to teach her a lesson by making her think he really is going to rape her. Of course, he cannot go through with it, and the two realize they are falling in love. They marry against their parents' wishes and the movie follows their tumultuous relationship.
Hazariprasad Anupam Kher, a dealer in used goods, and not very wealthy, has sights set up sky-high when he announces that his son, Raja Aamir Khan will marry a multi-millionaire's daughter. He masquerades as a wealthy industrialist to fool wealthy Mr. Mehra Saeed Jaffrey, and does succeed in attempting to get his son engaged to Madhur Verma Madhuri Dixit, however, at that very engagement ceremony, Mehra finds out about Hazariprasad's masquerade humiliates him, and cancels the engagement. But by that time both Raja and Madhu have fallen in love, but now their respective fathers are determined to stop both at any cost from getting married.
