Prithviraj: Hobbled on home front, but riding high in Kollywood

Unsung and uncared for on home turf, but feted and lionized in the neighbourhood. That has been the lot of young Malayalam actor Prithviraj .

Not that Prithvi did not have good films made under prestigious banners in Malayalam. But somehow, he just could not make it to the top in Mollywood.

Some of the Malayalam films featuring him – ‘Akale’, ‘Ammakkilikkoodu’, ‘Vellinakshatram’, ‘Sathyam’, ‘Krithyam’, ‘Daivanamathil’ , to mention a few – did fare well at the box office too. But they did not catapult Prithvi to the pinnacle of fame.

Ultimately, it took a Tamil film to turn the tide in Prithvi’s favour. In the film, ‘Kana Kandein’ – Keralite actress Gopika was the heroine and Tamil actor Srikanth the hero – Prithvi played the villain and walked away with rave reviews. ‘Kana Kandein’ marked Prithvi’s arrival in Kollywood.

But Prithvi’s longing to make it big as a hero remained unfulfilled until ‘Parijatham’ came. ‘Parijatham’, directed by veteran Bhagyaraj, gave Prithvi the break he needed. In the wake of the success of ‘Parijatham’, Prithvi has become one of the most sought-after heroes in Tamil cinema.

Needless to say, offers are coming his way. Right now, he has three new Tamil films in the kitty.

One of the Tamil films in the making is ‘Mozhi’ produced by Prakash Raj. In this film, Prithvi is paired with leading heroine, Jyothika . The Vasant-directed ‘Sattam Podathe’ is another movie he has bagged. Then there is the untitled film to be directed by G.Thilakan.

As if all this is not enough, Prithvi has been signed up for a Telugu flick, too. The film, with Anjali Zaveri in the female lead, will be directed by Bhushan.

From the look of things, it is clear that young Prithvi is now literally having a whale of a time in Kollywood.

One fervently hopes he makes a similar turnaround on home front as well.
