For actor Aamir Khan , martyr Mangal Pandey symbolizes the rising of a new tide for freedom that culminated into India’s Independence from the British.

In director Ketan Mehta’s film The Rising , Aamir plays Mangal Pandey, the heroic sepoy who led mutiny against the British in 1857. It is said that Mangal Pandey provided the first spark that led to a bigger freedom movement throughout India in the late 19th century.

‘The Rising’ is aptly timed to release on August 12, just three days before the Indians celebrate the day of their Independence from the British imperialism.

In the pre-release promotion of the movie, Aamir has said that it was a big challenge for him to play the valiant man on whom so little has been persevered in records.

“For me, Mangal Pandey is a symbol of freedom. Mangal Pandey is the name of that person who wanted to attain freedom at any cost, the one who symbolizes true passion for freedom, who had the spirit to do something for his nation. He was the first spark of revolt against the British,” said Aamir in a press conference.

Aamir said that to prepare for his role he read a lot about those times. However, what he rued was that there was just a little bit of information about Mangal Pandey.

So he had to rely a great deal on director Ketan Mehta and storywriter Farookh Dhondy.

Even as there are weeks to go before ‘The Rising’ hits the marquee, the 90-seconds theatrical trailer of the movie is already been screened in the theatres. The trailer shows Aamir Khan walking in shackles with the patriotic song ‘Mangal, Mangal’ in the background.

Expectations of the movie buffs, film distributors and the movie’s producers are riding high that ‘Mangal Pandey The Rising’ will turn out to be a money spinner at the box-office. The film also stars Rani Mukherjee , Amisha Patel and Hollywood’s Toby Stephens and Coral Beed .
