Wardrobe Malfunction : It’s all a part of fashion

Tops and skirts coming off on the catwalk is not something new to fashion. It is all a part and parcel of it.

Not even former Miss Universe (2004) Jennifer Hawkins was spared the embarrassment when the heavy skirt of her Bora dress came off while she was walking the ramp at a Sydney Fashion Show in September 2004.

And who doesn’t know of Nigar Khan ’s bra slipping down at a fashion show in Norway last year. While Miss Hawkins had a red thong underneath her skirt, Nigar had no such cover for her breasts that were exposed in daylight to many a popping eyes and flashing cameras.

And the recent wardrobe malfunctions making the news are those involving Carol Gracias and Gauhar Khan at the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai.

The top of Carol’s halter neck dress came off on Wednesday while she was walking the ramp in a Bennu Sehgall outfit. Incredibly, Carol handled the faux pas with remarkable calm and grace, without betraying any embarrassment.

And on the day three of LFW, it was former Miss India Gauhar Khan who had a wardrobe malfunction after the zip of her skirt rend open while displaying an outfit designed by Lascelles Symons.

Fashion designer Manish Malhotra says wardrobe malfunctions are part of fashion shows and people should not create a hullabaloo out of such incidents.

The reason for such faux pas, the designer says, is partly because there are a limited number of models who have to display the entire collection in a given time. So backstage, they get less than a minute to change dresses.

This precisely is the point made by Bollywood’s Koena Mitra who walked the ramp at LFW on Wednesday. Koena says that to avoid such incidents in future more models should be hired so that they have ample time to slip into outfits.

Designer Ashish Soni says nobody is to be blamed for wardrobe malfunctions. He stresses that designers do their best to make sure the outfits are designed in such a way that they don’t come off as easily as they seem to.
