Bollywood filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has said that his upcoming film Sarkar Raj was based on a completely original script and had no reference point.

Speaking at the unveiling of the film's first look in Mumbai on Sunday night, Varma said, "Normally a sequel begins where the first part had ended. But, 'Sarkar Raj' has no connection to Sarkar . The scale is much bigger. If the first film was inspired by 'The Godfather', the second has no reference point and was a completely original script."

He felt that film's 'larger than life' quality came from the intensity of the performances of Amitabh Bachchan , Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

"It is because of them that `Sarkar Raj' comes across as a powerful film," he added.

Varma also took the opportunity to say 'Sarkar Raj' was a fictional script and had no connection with any living person. Varma felt that in realistic films, the audiences are bound to draw inference from an element or a character existing in real life. "This is the psychological aspect," he said.

Varma said the sequel is an intense political drama and is essentially a study of power. It explores the politics of development and takes a fresh look at the tradition versus modernity debate.

In Sarkar Raj, 'Sarkar' (Bachchan) takes a backseat while his son Shankar Nagre (Abhishek) holds fort. Ash who plays the CEO of Sheppard Power, an international power company, brings a proposal to set up a power plant in rural Maharashtra, before the Nagres.

An insightful Shankar is quick to realize the benefits of the power plant that can bring to the people. After convincing Sarkar (Bachchan) who is against it for various reasons, Shankar undertakes a journey along with Ash to villages of Maharashtra to mobilise support of the masses.

However, things are not what they seem to be. Shankar's dream project gradually becomes a political minefield. It is in this backdrop that the evil forces mightier than ever, mushroom and gang up to bring down Sarkar's regime and obliterate Shankar's name from the political horizon, Varma said.

Varma said he wanted to work with Jaya Bachchan as well. "Recently, I saw the film `Uphar' on television and felt I had never seen such kind of performance before. If a good script comes up, I will definitely want to work with her," he added.

Varma also took the opportunity to praise Bachchan and said the Big B enjoyed a following among all age groups. "Audiences had said I should not have done Nishabd and 'Aag' ( Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag ) but he still put his trust in me," the filmmaker said.

"I thought I could play around with his face to amuse myself. I am sorry Amitji for misplacing your trust," Varma said.
